Keynote / roundtable: The University as a Political Actor
Ineffective / Bad Policy book launch
You are invited to the book launch of "Ineffective Policies: Causes and Consequences of Bad Policy Choices", by Ian Roberge, Heather McKeen-Edwards, and Malcolm Campbell-Verduyn.
Bad policies have repercussions that can be felt for decades. But what makes a bad policy? And how can it be reversed or improved?
Bringing together scholars from Europe and North America, this book goes beyond traditional policy theory to study bad and ineffective policies across three fields:
• the environment;
• the financial services sector; and
• emerging technologies.
Using cutting-edge research and analysis, the editors and authors state the case for studying ineffective policies, demonstrate their harmful effects across policy fields and provide policy makers with the tools to reflect, identify, and act upon them.
Join us for an engaging discussion on the key themes of the book, exploring why bad policy choices persist and their broader implications. There will be opportunities for Q&A and conversation with the authors.
NKWP Annual Meeting
Kick off your conference experience with our friendly and informal networking event, designed especially for Etmaal first-timers (but open to all)! We’ll give you a quick introduction to the Nederlandse Kring voor de Wetenschap der Politiek (NKPW) and - if they conform - the Flemish Vereniging voor Politieke Wetenschappen (VPW), share how we can support your work, and then it’s all about meeting fellow newcomers. Make connections and start Etmaal with some friendly faces by your side!.
Open Visit of the Documentation Centre for Dutch Political Parties (DNPP)
On Thursday and Friday, there is an excellent opportunity to visit the Documentation Centre for Dutch Political Parties (DNPP), located in the university library. Since 1973, the DNPP has been committed to studying the development and functioning of the party system in the Netherlands and Europe. The DNPP conducts its own research and collects and makes accessible materials about political parties and party democracy. You’ll find nearly all publications and other materials produced by Dutch political parties, past and present — from foundational programs to brochures, from academic journals to campaign materials. You are welcome to browse through our collection and have a look at original programs, posters, and curiosities that Dutch politicians have used over the years in their efforts to win votes.
Book Presentation: Populist Radical Right Parties in Action: The Survival of the Mass Party
Professor Daniele Albertazzi, Professor Stijn van Kessel and Dr. Adrian Favero present their forthcoming book titled: "Populist Radical Right Parties in Action: The Survival of the Mass Party". The book has three key aims: 1) to interrogate the enduring relevance of the mass party model; 2) to assess the motivations of Populist Radical Right Parties (PRRP) elites to invest in this organisational model; 3) to assess why PRRP members, especially the more engaged activists, are willing to sacrifice time and effort to the benefit of their party. Research for this book has been conducted among PRRP's in 4 countries (Finland - Finns Party, Belgium - Vlaams Belang, Italy - Lega, and Switzerland - Swiss People's Party).
The results in the book challenge the still-prevailing assumption that the strength of PRRPs in Europe is due to ‘charismatic leadership’, and to draw lessons for the academic literature that can be applied to party organisations more generally. The book provides a new point of view on PRRP's, allowing us to re-evaluate the traditional wisdoms of party organisation theory, and to show how traditional forms of party organisation adapt to changing political contexts and communication environments.
Professor Carla Hoetink from the DNPP will provide the Dutch perspective on PRRP's and their potential mass party organisation.
The Future of Open Publishing: Launch of Politics of the Low Countries
Join us for a roundtable discussion on the importance of open publishing in academia. This session marks the launch of Politics of the Low Countries (PLC) in its new diamond open access model with Radboud University Press. The transition to open publishing comes at a time when universities face financial challenges, making sustainable and accessible research dissemination more important than ever. We will explore the opportunities and challenges of open publishing and discuss the role of funding bodies in shaping its future.
Confirmed speakers : Bert Bakker - Associate Professor at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research, University of Amsterdam; Mirjam Ernestus - Board Member of Radboud University Press, Professor in Psycholinguistics, Radboud University; Maurits Meijers - Co-Editor-in-Chief of PLC, Associate Professor at the Department of Political Science, Radboud University; Jeroen Sondervan - Programme leader "open scholarly communication" at Open Science NL, NWO; Audrey Vandeleene - Co-Editor-in-Chief of PLC, Lecturer and Senior researcher at the Department of Political Science, Université libre de Bruxelles
